Coalbed Methane / Coal Seam Drilling Services

Provided by SDI, Offshore Shelf Drilling Specialists

  • Over 5,000 Laterals Drilled
  • Azimuthal Gamma Ray LWD Motor Technology

Scientific Drilling International (SDI) has pioneered many new technologies which have greatly assisted in the development of coal seam gas (CSG), commonly called coalbed methane (CBM).

Drilling horizontal laterals in CBM/CSG reservoirs can be quite challenging, particularly when the goal is placing the lateral in a specific part of the coal seam with minimal undulations.

SDI has been drilling successful CBM/CSG projects for over a decade; with five thousand successful laterals, we are confident that we have the technology to tackle most any challenge in this sector of the energy industry.

CBM / CSG Drilling Technologies

Having an innovative and aggressive technology development program is a vital component of a successful directional drilling service provider. SDI has an in-house team of professionals dedicated to finding innovative solutions.

As a result, SDI has presented the industry with a cost effective method to provide optimal wellbore placement for coalbed methane.

While drilling a lateral in coal, the wellbore is typically steered using focused gamma ray measurements on the high side and low side of the wellbore. The near bit azimuthal gamma ray Logging While Drilling Motor (LWDM) technology, developed by SDI, enables the ability to collect real-time gamma ray logs for both the upper and lower half of the wellbore, while rotating. This proves to be especially beneficial to the horizontal drilling operations and is especially true considering that typically greater than 90% of the footage in a lateral is drilled in the rotary mode.

Our LWDM azimuthal gamma ray measurements have proven to be extremely effective in steering horizontal wells with improved precision.
