New SDI Shale Drilling Technologies

Our dedication to developing key technologies to increase drilling efficiencies has helped SDI become the service provider of choice in most shale drilling areas. SDI has several new technologies in field trials that will further help improve well placement operations.

For example, SDI is developing a special drill motor.  This motor uses a deflected drive shaft, providing a very short bit to bend distance.  Because the body of this special drill motor is straight, a drilling team can build the medium radius curve sliding and rotating and then drill the lateral in one trip in the hole.

Another new technology is the SRX Rotary Steerable System (RSS) which is being developed to drill holes with sizes ranging from 7-7/8" to 8-3/4".   This system will aid in the extended lateral drilling process when shale horizontals require steering on laterals exceeding 7,000 feet in length.

These are only two examples of the technologies in development by SDI for drilling shale horizontals.  As long as operators continue drilling laterals in shale reservoirs, SDI will continue investing in technology to make the drilling process more efficient, both technically and economically.
