By SDI, Worldwide Provider of Guidance, Directional & Horizontal Drilling Services
MagTraC is Scientific Drilling International’s (SDI) proprietary magnetic well placement ranging service that has a proven track record on applications such as:
-
Wellbore Interception
- Relief Well Operations
- Plug and Abandon
- Open Hole Re-entry / “Fish Recovery”
-
Wellbore Clearance
- Anti-collision / “Slot Recovery”
- “Frac Salvage” / Twinning
-
Multi-well Templates / Pads
(offshore & onshore) - In-field Downspacing
-
“Ghost Well” / Unexpected
magnetic interference
MagTraC is an MWD ranging system that compares the earth’s naturally occurring magnetic field against the magnetic signature of a string of casing as the target reference and determines the distance and direction to the target.
Using SDI’s proprietary MagTraC software, we can range on the casing without the time-consuming disruption to drilling operations of having to make multiple trips in and out of the wellbore which is required by other ranging systems. Because of this, the MagTraC ranging service is often much less intrusive to the ongoing drilling operation.
It can be used with a variety of downhole navigation systems including wireline conveyed or MWD. It can also be used in conjunction with SDI’s survey, steering, and MWD systems or that of a third party.
The relevant data can be transmitted from the rig site to a remote SDI location in certain scenarios when it is not possible, or feasible, to have a MagTraC technician on location – reasons could be geographical location, security risk, short-notice callout, or customer preference. The data can then be processed and the calculated ranging information (distance and direction to target) is transmitted from the remote SDI location back to the well site and/or the customer’s office.
Pre-job planning is essential toward the successful execution of your MWD Ranging application. To facilitate the planning process, download and complete the MWD Ranging pre-job engineering data collection form.
