MWD

Scientific Drilling International (SDI) is a leading global provider of highly accurate Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) services. Backed by over 20 years of engineering and manufacturing excellence, our MWD systems have proven reliability and cost-effectiveness worldwide.

Mud Pulse MWD                                                            click here for Product Sheet

SDI’s Mud Pulse Measurement-While-Drilling (MP-MWD) system uses a robust compensated mud pulser design to support a wide range of flow rates and is well-suited for many types of lost circulation material (LCM).

The MP-MWD system is fully programmable, allowing optimization of transmitted data according to specific drilling conditions. MWD magnetic navigation data is standard, and includes precision inclination, azimuth, and toolface using accelerometers and magnetometers which are designed, built, and calibrated by SDI to strict quality standards. The MP-MWD system can also be configured to provide peak g-vibration, gamma and annular pressure, and serves as a telemetry platform for SDI’s advanced LWD solutions.

MP-MWD tools are probe-based and run in standard collar sizes from 3.13" to 9.5" OD.

E-Field Electromagnetic MWD                                         click here for Product Sheet

The Electromagnetic MWD system "E-Field" was introduced to meet the needs of the growing number of projects involving under-balanced drilling. Drilling on pure air, foam, mist, or similar compressible products precludes the use of normal Mud Pulse technology. E-Field also provides increased ruggedness during harsh drilling conditions since it has no moving parts.

E-Field systems use bi-directional communications and offer the advantage of very high data rates that are approximately four times faster than conventional MWD. Gamma, focused gamma, annular pressure and peak g-vibration monitoring are available with these systems.

Tools can be run in collar sizes from 3.125" to 9.5" OD and are available in a retrievable configuration when required.

E-Field Long Wire system for deeper projects

The E-Field long wire system allows the E-Field tool to be run deeper on drilling projects where the formation would have previously absorbed the electromagnetic signal downhole.

Gyro MWD (gMWD)                                                        click here for Product Sheet

The Gyro Measurement-While-Drilling (gMWD) system redefines pad and close-proximity drilling operations by enabling high-accuracy surveying in the presence of magnetic interference when using an MWD tool.

The system consists of field-proven gyro and magnetic drilling sensor modules combined in a single MWD tool. In most cases, the gyro sensor is used until the well clears external magnetic interference sources, at which time the gyro can be put to sleep and the magnetic probe is used to complete the hole section without a trip.

The technology produces a tool capable of significant time savings over typical wireline conveyed gyros and conventional MWD tools.  Additionally, gMWD eliminates the need to use wireline to acquire directional data while drilling, removing unnecessary hazards and personnel from the rig.

In addition to the obvious multi-well platform, top-hole scenario, recent projects have involved the system being used for whipstock setting/window milling operations where the tool is capable of remaining in-hole for the milling operation.

Gyro MWD can be connected to SDI’s MP-MWD and E-Field systems..

LWD

Scientific Drilling International (SDI) LWD systems provide a reliable and cost-effective solution for our customers. Our Gamma Ray, Extended Gamma/Inclination (Gain) and Propagation Resistivity tools help land the bit in the reservoir. Geosteering using Resistivity, Smart Motor Geosteering System and Azimuthal Gamma Ray keep the bit in the "sweet spot" within the reservoir.

Gamma Ray (GR)

SDI’s Gamma Ray is a probe-based, API calibrated sensor that can be run with any of SDI’s MWD systems in all configurations. The Gamma Ray tool detects naturally occurring Gamma radiations from the formation.

On the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA), the Gamma Ray tool is placed just above the motor allowing the reservoir to be quickly detected.

Real-time gamma data from the tool can be used to correlate with offset logs giving the client confidence as drilling progresses.

Gamma Inclination (Gain)                                                 click here for Product Sheet

The Gain tool has the same characteristics as SDI’s Gamma Ray tool, but also includes Inclination measurements. It is a probe-based, API calibrated sensor that can be run with any of SDI’s MWD systems. The Gain tool detects naturally occurring Gamma radiations from the formation.

On the Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA), the Gain tool is extended and placed just above the motor allowing the reservoir to be quickly detected. The Inclination reading from the Gain tool allows the Directional Driller to quickly ‘see’ build rates from the motor.

Azimuthal Gamma Inclination (AziGain)

SDI’s AziGain tool is an excellent tool used in Geosteering applications to stay within the "sweet spot" of the reservoir. The tool provides Azimuthal Gamma readings as well as inclination readings. It is a probe-based sensor that can be run with any of SDI’s MWD systems.

On the Bottom Hole Assembly, the AziGain tool is extended and placed just above the motor giving the client enough time to quickly react to formation changes.

Smart Motor Geosteering System (SMGS)                     click here for Product Sheet

SDI’s Smart Motor Geosteering System (SMGS) is configured to facilitate enhanced navigation in horizontal and directional wellbores.

The SMGS contains a power section, a smart housing containing the sensors, a bent housing and a bearing section. The sensor section contains accelerometers and an azimuthal gamma ray sensor, which are housed in the payload attached to the motor housing. The placement of the sensors on the motor, just above the bend, allows more accurate inclination readings and protects the sensors from extreme downhole conditions.

The SMGS uses SDI’s proprietary Wi-Sci communication link to achieve real-time, bi-directional wireless communication between the MWD and Smart Motor.

Propagation Resistivity Tool (PRT)                                click here for Product Sheet

SDI’s  PRT is a probe-based 2MHz, dual spaced resistivity tool.  The tool provides four resistivity curves - 2 phase and 2 attenuation curves.  The tool can be configured to run with SDI’s Gamma Ray, GaIn, Azimuthal GaIn or Smart Motor systems.

The PRT is an excellent correlation tool, and can help the client accurately land in the reservoir. In geosteering applications, the PRT can help clients avoid Oil/Water contacts or stay within the "sweet spot" of the reservoir.

The PRT can be configured to run in memory mode and can log data as fast as one sample per second.  In this mode, the tool can log 2 points per foot of data while tripping in or tripping out of the hole at speeds of up to 1800ft/hr.
